Building a reliable network, is easy, as long as you pay attention to what you are buying, the software you are installing and, most importantly, knowing what you need. To build a LAN is about as easy as it gets nowaday's. You buy a few Network Interface Cards (NIC's), install them into your Windows 9X/ME or 2000/XP controlled computer and let them do their thing. Share some files, and you have your LAN. Sounds easy, eh?
Now, you add a server, hey cool, you just have to get it to act as the go-between, then make sure that all programs come from and go to that server. After all, you want all your data backed up on the server, and backed up on a regular bases... right? Hey, that means you have to get a tape backup drive, or a CD-Rom Burner.
Now comes the software, and when to set the timer to back up. That wasn't too hard, then you get the idea you want Internet, be it high speed or dialup. You can get software to do that right? What about DHCP? Maybe even wireless? Did you say you had a PDA that had infrared capabilities? Suddenly this isn't so easy.
